Hummus, paper towels, Chanel, and Vuitton

All these items may not be on your shopping list, but they are on many New Yorkers’ since the grand opening of big-box retailer Costco this past Friday. Just like the Jimmy Choo + H&M madness New York fashionites are making the trek to the mega-store in hopes of getting some good deals. They also carry Burberry and Coach, along with Chanel cosmetics and the infamous Ugg boots. While shelling out $2K for Chanel’s Classic Flap Handbag is a deal, paying $589 for an out of style LV Speedy isn’t. However, they did sell out thanks to the low price tag.
Label whore purses and Uggs may be out of style in LA, but they’re obviously still hot in NYC. Oh and if you think you can get these steals online – think
again – they’re all NYC in-store exclusives.

Chupa Chups gone wild – adult lollipops

Do you remember Chupa Chups lollipops? I loved that they tasted like ice cream! I haven’t had them in forever and wasn’t sure that they still existed until I stumbled upon this creative idea. Courtesy of design firm Firma, they have taken the cherished lollipop and turned it into an adult treat. These S+M sweets are just a concept and have not gone into production. But that is one way for a company to create an edgier image, now if only I could find the REAL Chupa Chups.

Earth as Art
Since it has been officially announced that there is water on the moon everyone seems to be gazing up at the stars a little differently. What does this mean? Travel in space? Can we build a fast food restaurant a strip mall there? Well, it probably means just more scientific experiments and probe trips. On the upside it gets people’s attention when it comes to the natural beauty that satellites capture of the galaxy and Earth from space.

Friday the 13th

Friday the Thirteenth is more than just a silly horror film; it is also a numbered that we’ve been taught to revere since childhood. Kind of silly if you ask me. However, here are some examples of how society’s fear of the numeral thirteen has taken over:
- Tarot Card number 13 is the Death Card and pictures the Grim Reaper
- Hospitals and Hotels typically omit room number 13
- Many cities opt out of having a 13th Street
- 13 letters in your name signifies the Devil’s luck (i.e. Charles Manson)
- Airports tend to skip the thirteenth gate
- More than 80% of high rises lack a 13th floor
- Italians omit the number 13 from their lottery
- Some streets in Florence, Italy omit house number 13, and instead mark homes 12 1/2
Superstitions via Huffington Post
There are many incidents throughout history that are possible origins for the day. The two most common are as follows.
1. The Knights of Templar (you may recall this from The DaVinci Code):
The Knights Templar were a monastic military order founded in Jerusalem in 1118 C.E., whose mission was to protect Christian pilgrims during the Crusades. Over the next two centuries, the Knights Templar became extraordinarily powerful and wealthy. Threatened by that power and eager to acquire their wealth, King Philip secretly ordered the mass arrest of all the Knights Templar in France on Friday, October 13, 1307 – Friday the 13th (wiki)
2. Ancient Myth:
Friday is named for Frigga, the free-spirited goddess of love and fertility. When Norse and Germanic tribes converted to Christianity, Frigga was banished in shame to a mountaintop and labeled a witch. It was believed that every Friday, the spiteful goddess convened a meeting with eleven other witches, plus the devil – a gathering of thirteen – and plotted ill turns of fate for the coming week. For many centuries in Scandinavia, Friday was known as “Witches’ Sabbath.” (wiki)
Whatever you chose to believe the fear is all in your head. While we’re at it does anyone really think black cats signify bad luck?
Alice in Wonderland

Even though Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland doesn’t release in theatres until March 5, 2010, the hype of this film continues to build. Typically, when films are over saturated in the media they tend to flop. However, I don’t think that will be the case for Alice. I’m also super stoked that the film will be in 3D, because 2D films are so passe these days. Besides, after watching UP everything in 3D feels much more emotional and exciting.
The movie posters were released via Facebook fan pages, as opposed to marketing placements. Perhaps, because the studio wants to create a viral buzz instead of an obnoxious trailer on tv and posters everywhere buzz. I have to agree, smart move.
Unisex = mainstream cross-dressing

The crew over at TrendHunter.tv nailed the unisex fashion trend with their latest video “Mainstream Cross-Dressing.” With top models like Agyness Deyn being portrayed in a more masculine sense and males swapping for more glam, metro, or fem looks the gender lines are blurred more than ever before.
So lets have some laughs along with it!
