Fallen Princesses Project
When that Disney fantasy ends a not so fairy tale life begins. Well, at least that’s how it goes in real life. Photographer Dina Goldstein showcases a fresh perspective on our beloved childhood role models.
She says, “As a young girl, growing up abroad, I was not exposed to Fairy tales. These new discoveries lead to my fascination with the origins of Fairy tales. I explored the original brothers Grimm’s stories and found that they have very dark and sometimes gruesome aspects, many of which were changed by Disney. I began to imagine Disney’s perfect Princesses juxtaposed with real issues that were affecting women around me, such as illness, addiction and self-image issues.”
I love it and I’m a huge fan of her other photography – like this sad photo here.

It's Nast-y if you're Condé

Poor Condé Nast’s pockets have a huge hole in them and sad editors are working their stilettos off trying to keep their underpaid assistant jobs. If you’re not familiar with the magic that is Condé Nast, they’re the publishing company that makes all those magazines that you’re too busy to read. Including: GQ, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Wired, and so forth. We all knew they were doing bad; but it seems like the infamous address 4 Times Square is turning into Poor Times Square. As stated in a recent New York Post article:
“They are having the worst year of any publisher,” said one rival executive who once worked at Condé Nast and said the company’s recent cuts of 5 percent each on expenses and staffing isn’t enough.
“They are overstaffed and overpaid. They should have cut back 20 percent when they cut back five,” this person said.
The company can barely give out subscriptions these days. They’re trying everything along with slashing prices. They desperately need to keep their subscriptions up, so their circulation remains high for advertising sales. For instance, see this GQ offer, (so debbie):
I can live without the “made in China” messenger bag. Is any publication able to persevere through this doom and gloom? Yes, actually there is. “Only one magazine in its stable is showing a rise over a year ago: Golf World, a small circulation weekly, that is up 16.5 percent through the Feb. 23 issue.” said the NY Post article.
Does that mean put down the Vogue (which totally sucks these days anyways) and pick up Golf World?
New BFFs: Chanel + Segway
No we’re not kidding. Karl Lagerfeld is probably tired of walking, so he summoned Segway to create him a chic way to get around. He can’t dare been seen on the same Segway that cops or mailmen use; he had to have his own unique twist on it. Check out the Chanel logo plastered everywhere and the signature quilted Chanel bag that rests over the handle bars. Now you can top out at 12mph in haute couture.

New fashion BFFs

Since when were Anna Wintour and JT BFFs? Apparently, he charmed her at NY Fashion Week. The William Rast show of course attracted celebs, but Anna Wintour? William Rast doesn’t even advertise in Vogue. Apparently celebrities are attempting to up their fashion anty, especially when they don’t have big companies behind them like Heidiwood. According to Fashion Rules, “Kanye West has been searching for an apprenticeship with a designer, willing to do anything and everything to learn from one of the best. Justin Timberlake backstage at the Mercedes Benz Star Lounge after his fashion show, was seen listening intently to the advice of Anna Wintour.”

Twitter speeds up trend evolution
Is Twitter going to speed up the fashion trend life cycle? It has the potential to according to ConsumingPR. They stated, “With the exception of WWD, fashion trends are mostly reported by print magazine[s] on a monthly basis. Now, with the use of twitter, fashionistas everywhere can consume fashion 24/7. This enables consumers to become inspired by trends, designers and celebrities at any moment.”
We at LA Pretty love our Twitter friends and have found that the site helps increase our readership. Although, there is a huge abundance tweets on Twitter, many of them can be irrelevant or off topic. This makes it harder to follow those fiesty fashion bloggers. Twitter isn’t succeeding on its own; behind every good tweet is a savvy author with a website. These online outlets accompanied by Twitter provide runway to ready to wear inspiration for fashionistas everywhere. Although, you need to know who to follow.
With magazine lead times going a snail’s pace (4-6 months), maybe they’ll need to adjust further to accompany this viral speed. Lets not forget department stores and buyers, how will they keep us as new fashion demands evolve? Only time will tell.
I’m going to tweet about this now.
xx,
A
